COLLEGE ALGEBRA is an e-book designed primarily for college students engaged in self-study.  Geared for undergraduates majoring in fields other than mathematics, engineering or science, it can also be very useful to students who are enrolled in an algebra course and who seek extra help.  Comprehensive in its exploration of college-level algebra, the book meets the needs of the audience for which it is designed while maintaining a proper level of sophistication with the subject matter.

COLLEGE ALGEBRA  consists of 865 pages and includes 14 chapters of text.  It consumes about eight megabytes on a single CD.  It is also downloadable to various computer storage media.  The book is fully bookmarked to enable easy access to all of its components, including chapters and chapter subsections.

Competence in college algebra is often perceived as a general education requirement signaling literacy in mathematics for college students whose majors are in fields other than math or science in BA or BS degree programs.  Many students, including those who did well with algebra in high school, do not have an adequate command of the subject when they present themselves for a college algebra course.  COLLEGE ALGEBRA  can be a valuable self-study resource in addressing this problem.

SPECIAL FEATURES of  COLLEGE ALGEBRA :

Definitions, concepts, theorems, and algebraic principles, properties and methods are explained in full detail with the student in mind.

Detailed explanations are provided in an engaging, positive conversational style.  Students are encouraged to develop and use their understanding of concepts, laws and properties of algebraic entities.  “Blind” memorization of rules of algebraic manipulation without a clear understanding of main ideas and principles of algebra is discouraged.  Sound approaches to problem solving are promoted. 

Every chapter contains an abundance of well designed examples which are developed in a step-by-step format to promote students’ understanding of the concepts and subject matter presented.  More than 425 examples are included.

A Review section of each chapter includes a set of homework exercises closely related to the concepts and principles developed in the chapter.  There are 408 exercises in all.  Students are encouraged to attempt all of them in whatever number of sittings they require.  Step-by-step solutions are provided for 330 of these.

In all but the first two chapters, each chapter’s Review section includes a well designed set of multiple-choice test items which enables the student to obtain a self-assessment of his or her understanding of key terms, definitions, concepts, and principles developed in the chapter.  Correct answers are given in a separate subsection.  Additional comments are provided for many of the items.

The Review section of each chapter includes a list of terms, concepts, principles and properties presented in the chapter along with corresponding page designations.

Throughout the book, special notes or “aside comments” are given.  At times, the purpose is to clarify something.  Often, it’s an effort to guide and encourage the student regarding a good approach in doing algebra.
